Traffic Psychology 101

An introduction to the inner life of the stationary commuter: the management of false hope, the discipline of the single car-length, and the cultivation of patience as a practised skill.

Learning Outcomes

  • 01Regulate the emotional response to the merge that undoes progress.
  • 02Convert waiting time into a resource rather than a loss.
  • 03Resist the lure of the lane that appears, falsely, to be moving.
  • 04Arrive composed, regardless of the hour at which you arrive.

Syllabus

  1. Week 1

    The False Clearing

Why the open road ahead is rarely what it promises.

  2. Week 2

    The Other Lane

It is not moving faster. It only appears to be. A study in perception.

  3. Week 3

    The Single Car-Length

Finding genuine satisfaction in incremental advance.

  4. Week 4

    The Inner Commute

Using the stationary hour for reflection, audio, and the self.

  5. Week 5

    The Honk

When to sound it, when to absorb it. A philosophy of the horn.

  6. Week 6

    Arrival

Letting go of the time it took. Being present upon arrival.

Assessment

A timed serenity assessment at a live signal, graded on composure rather than speed.
